  • Maca Overview

Maca is a natural food, also known as “Peruvian Ginsing”. It is derived from the root of the ancestral plant (Lepidium Meyenii), which is part of the brassica (mustard) family. It is grown in the high plateaus of the Andes Mountains in Peru. Maca, more specifically the root of the plant, has long been used by indigenous Andean societies as a nutritional vegetable crop for thousands of years. Alovitox Gelatinized Maca Powder is the natural form of this special root that has been concentrated by extracting the starch. This process breaks down the hard to digest starches to aid in the digestion and absorption of Maca’s nutritional benefits.
  • Maca Benefits

As a naturally fat-free food, Maca is packed with an abundance of vitamins, minerals, amino acids and sterols. Maca is a good source of Vitamin C with 22% of recommended DV per suggested serving size of 1 tsp daily. Although there is insufficient evidence to support many of the specific benefits, Peruvian folklore has touted numerous physiological and emotional health benefits of the maca root, as they consider it a miracle food.

Maca is a natural, nutritional food, not a miracle drug. More evidence is needed to evaluate the benefits and side effects of Maca as they have not been reviewed by the FDA. Alovitox Naturals products are not intended to treat, diagnose, cure or prevent any disease.

  • Maca FAQs:

Q: What is the difference between Maca Powder and Gelatinized Maca Powder? ?

A: Gelatinized Maca refers to the process of breaking down the hard to digest starches in the root to aid in easier digestion of the product, while still benefitting from its use. Gelatinization uses heat to break the cellular walls of the starch molecules and they are extracted from the Maca. Raw Maca powder has never been heated above 118F/43C. That makes it a whole food and leaves all nutrients intact, however due to starchy content, it may be harder to digest for some users. ?

Q: How much Maca should I take daily? ?

A: If you are new to using Maca, we recommend starting out with ¼ to ½ of a tsp (1500mg to 2500mg) per day. Each individual responds to Maca differently and some might find this amount to be substantial each morning, while others might benefit to breaking up your intake throughout the day. There are several factors that may affect your optimal use, such as age, weight, overall health, etc. Please refrain from taking more than 1 tsp a day until you see how your body responds to the maca root. It is also a good idea to consult your doctor if you are taking Maca as part of your daily nutritional regimen. ?

Q: At what time of the day should I take Maca, if using daily?

A: Most users prefer to take their Maca first thing in the morning, while others feel spreading daily amount throughout the day helps to maintain hormonal balance. One thing to bear in mind is that Maca is used to energize, so some users might find it difficult to fall asleep at night. If you are concerned about this, we recommend not taking Maca after 2 pm. ?

Q: Are there any side effects of taking Maca? ?

A: Maca is not a drug and has no known side effects, but see below for possible individual precautions of taking Maca: • Since Maca is used to increase energy and stamina, it may lead to insomnia in some users, so you will have to see what works best you, but at the onset we recommend taking Maca prior to 2 pm. • You may feel “jittery” or feel like you have too much energy, especially if you are new to taking Maca, if this happens simply reduce your daily intake. • You may have increased acne as a new user, but this is usually temporary and as your body balances hormones, it will likely lessen and/or disappear. ?

Q: Is Maca safe or are there any special precautions for pregnant or breast-feeding women?

A: Maca is LIKELY SAFE for most people when taken in amounts found in foods. As with any new source of vitamins and minerals in your diet, we recommend consulting your doctor if you are taking Maca as part of your daily nutritional regimen. ?

Pregnancy and breast-feeding: There is not enough reliable information about the safety of taking Maca if you are pregnant or breast feeding. We recommend pregnant and nursing women avoid use or consult their doctor for complete approval prior to use. ?

Q: Why is there a California Proposition 65 warning label on Maca Powder? ?

A: California Prop 65 warnings arerequired by California’s Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986. Companies are required to place a warning label on any product they sell within California if it exceeds the level that the State has established as risk free for a list of over eight hundred chemicals. These standards are specific to the state of California. The lead standard in California is more stringent than what is required at the U.S. federal level, and by other governments including Canada and the European Union. Under California Prop 65, the State of California has determined that the safe harbor level for lead to avoid the risk of reproductive toxicity is no more than 0.5 mcg/day. This was calculated by identifying the level of exposure that has been shown to have no observable effect and then dividing that level by 1,000, to provide a very large margin of safety. California's 0.5 mcg/day threshold for lead is 150 times less than the 75 mcg/day limit that the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has indicated as safe for consumption by pregnant and lactating women. It should be noted that California is the only state that requires warning labels at this low of a level.
